Where to spend, where to save

Spend on: waterproofing (cheap is a disaster), tile installation (poor tiling shows immediately), tapware (cheap mixers fail in 5 years), shower screens (frameless reads premium).

Save on: standard tiles can look great if well-laid; off-the-shelf vanities work if the bathroom is small; chrome over matte black if budget is tight.

The unexpected costs

  • Removing existing waterproofing and tile beds (sometimes requires concrete cutting): $1,500
  • Asbestos cement sheeting in older bathrooms requires licensed removal: $1,200 to $4,000
  • Re-routing plumbing if changing fixture positions: $2,000 to $5,000
  • Window replacement (if needed): $1,500 to $3,500
  • Skylight installation (if upgrading natural light): $2,500 to $4,500

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick Answers

Yes, for a modest cosmetic update to a standard 4 to 5 sqm bathroom. Demolition, basic floor and wall tiling, a new vanity, a new toilet, a new shower screen, a basic mixer and showerhead, and waterproofing. Choose builder-grade fixtures and standard tiles. The result is a clean modern bathroom but not a luxury one.
A full renovation including premium tile choice ($60 to $90/sqm), frameless shower screen, custom vanity with stone top, freestanding bathtub, designer tapware (matte black or brushed brass), heated towel rail, niche shelves, and a window or skylight upgrade if needed. The bathroom feels designed, not just renovated.
A premium bathroom with bespoke joinery, full slab marble or stone feature wall, heated bathroom floors, integrated bathroom storage, frameless walk-in shower with rain head, freestanding stone bath, premium European or Australian designer brand tapware, double vanity with stone top and integrated basins. Comparable to a luxury hotel bathroom.
From demolition to handover, allow 4 to 8 weeks for a standard $20k to $40k renovation, 6 to 10 weeks for a $60k+ premium renovation. The longest single lead time is usually waterproofing curing (3 days), tiling (5 to 10 days depending on complexity) and grout curing (3 days).
Usually no. Like-for-like bathroom renovation without structural changes, without changing the building footprint and without adding plumbing fixtures is typically exempt development. Adding plumbing fixtures or structural changes (knocking down a wall) may require a Complying Development Certificate. Always check with your council.
